In 2015, a study recovered mDNA from historical canid specimens which were discovered on Zhokhov Island along with the Yana river, arctic Siberia. These specimens bundled the mandible of a 360,000–four hundred,000 YBP Canis cf. variabilis (in which cf. is often a Latin time period indicating u
